Democratic Women Took Center Stage at SOTU 2019

On Feb. 5, President Donald Trump gave his State of the Union address that also functioned as a fact-checking practice. Trump covered topics like the economy, building a border wall between the United States and Mexico, foreign policy, and abortion. As people watched on social media, they also tweeted. On the day of SOTU, there were 3.3m tweets about the topic.

The most discussed topic is the Democratic response, delivered by Stacey Abrams, former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee. Abrams’ called for a fairer voting process that is more inclusive of suppressed voters, lowering healthcare costs, and equitable education opportunities. Abortion was also a hot topic. With Roe v Wade under threat from the Trump administration, people tweeted their concerns about protecting abortion rights. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is known for being outspoken on progressive causes, stole attention for her unimpressed facial expressions while Trump delivered his speech.

The top retweeted tweets were centered around women’s rights and immigration. Conservative Candace Owens’ tweet that criticized Democrats resonated with the Trump-supporting crowd. Nancy Pelosi’s clap took social media by storm, as people called it a “diss clap.”
